China exposes most foreign journalists since 1989: FCCC report

Working conditions for foreign journalists in China worsened in 2020. China has deported 18 correspondents, the highest since the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident.

This information was given by the Foreign Correspondents Club of China (FCCC) on Monday. The FCCC said Chinese authorities limited reporting on the Kovid-19 pandemic and deported them, keeping an eye on journalists.

According to the report, Chinese authorities intensified efforts to thwart the work of foreign correspondents in 2020. Surveillance systems brought in to control all organs of the state and the corona virus were used to harass and bully journalists, their Chinese allies. At the same time, people who were wanted to be interviewed by foreign media were also harassed.

According to the report, not a single journalist in the FCCC survey for the third consecutive year said that working conditions had improved. According to the report, foreign correspondents were targeted for an alleged investigation into national security and were told that they could not leave the country.

In addition, China canceled the press credentials and refused to renew the visa. In the first six months of 2020, China deported at least 18 foreign journalists from the New York Times, Wall Street General and Washington Post (all three US newspapers).

"We never recognized the organization that you mentioned," Wang Wenbin, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of China, said in a media briefing when asked to respond to the FCCC report. He said that the so-called report is based on prejudices rather than facts and an attempt has been made to spread sensation and fear.
